NGO/Group Objectives

Dar Hosea is a drop-in centre which strives to provide a safe, tranquil and welcoming environment to women who seek support and refuge from abuse, violence, poverty, addiction, mental health issues and any other harm or turmoil. The organisation seeks to actively reach out to women who are at risk of, or victimised through prostitution and sexual exploitation. Within the drop-in centre, attendees can benefit from the provision of basic needs, including warm meals, showers and beds to rest throughout the day. Beyond this, women are offered the opportunity to engage with a multidisciplinary, psychosocial service offering social work, counselling and therapeutic services, along with the organisation of other workshops that promote reflection and self-development. This approach seeks to help individuals reconnect with their inner selves, aiming to support the rebuilding of trust and self-belief, and inspire the attainment of one's full potential.

NGO/Group Objectives

To provide a safe space for LGBTI+ persons and their families where they can explore the intersections between sexuality and faith.

Brief Description of NGO/Group

Drachma is an LGBT organisation founded in 2004, originally made up of LGBTI persons seeking to integrate their sexuality with their spirituality. In 2008, a parallel and autonomous Parents Group was created. Eventually, the two groups established a VO that was registered in 2015. The two groups work towards supporting LGBTI+ persons, the parents and families of LGBTI+ persons, and people of good faith especially in the journey of faith, in bridge building with the Catholic Church and other faith communities, and with the LGBTI+ community and other groups in the periphery. We work for greater inclusion at all levels and for the respect of human dignity and personhood.

Projects Being Run

Drachma LGBTI meet twice a month, on the first and third Friday of the month. The parent group meets once a month on the third Wednesday or Thursday. We are currently working on the publication of an updated second edition of 'Uliedna Rigal' in Maltese and English (a resource book for parents and LGBTIs originally published in 2016), and a publication on the Bible and LGBTI in Maltese. We are also currently working on revamping our website and logo.

Brief Description of NGO/Group

JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels, with the support of a regional office in Brussels, and an international office in Rome. Founded in November 1980 as a work of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Fr Pedro Arrupe, who was Father General at the time, was deeply moved by the plight of the Vietnamese boat people. JRS was born as a response to this crisis. JRS Malta has advocated for improved protection and access to rights for asylum seekers and refugees since it was established in Malta in 1993. We have offered legal assistance to asylum seekers in detention and in the community since 1999, and social work services since 2003. Initially our social work service was focused on supporting vulnerable individuals and families, first in detention and, later, in the community. From 2008, JRS started expanding its social work service to include a broader range of psychosocial services and support, such as: support to access medical care (since 2008), psychological support to individuals or groups of migrants (since 2010) and support to access employment (since 2016). Today JRS operates a phone line providing information, basic integration support and assistance and advice on legal matters and integration-related issues. This initial contact is often followed by an in-person appointment with one of our professionals. We also visit the Initial Reception Centre (IRC), detention and open centres regularly, providing information and legal assistance to all new arrivals.
