NGO/Group Objectives

To provide a safe space for LGBTI+ persons and their families where they can explore the intersections between sexuality and faith.

Brief Description of NGO/Group

Drachma is an LGBT organisation founded in 2004, originally made up of LGBTI persons seeking to integrate their sexuality with their spirituality. In 2008, a parallel and autonomous Parents Group was created. Eventually, the two groups established a VO that was registered in 2015. The two groups work towards supporting LGBTI+ persons, the parents and families of LGBTI+ persons, and people of good faith especially in the journey of faith, in bridge building with the Catholic Church and other faith communities, and with the LGBTI+ community and other groups in the periphery. We work for greater inclusion at all levels and for the respect of human dignity and personhood.

Projects Being Run

Drachma LGBTI meet twice a month, on the first and third Friday of the month. The parent group meets once a month on the third Wednesday or Thursday. We are currently working on the publication of an updated second edition of 'Uliedna Rigal' in Maltese and English (a resource book for parents and LGBTIs originally published in 2016), and a publication on the Bible and LGBTI in Maltese. We are also currently working on revamping our website and logo.

Brief Description of NGO/Group

JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels, with the support of a regional office in Brussels, and an international office in Rome. Founded in November 1980 as a work of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), Fr Pedro Arrupe, who was Father General at the time, was deeply moved by the plight of the Vietnamese boat people. JRS was born as a response to this crisis. JRS Malta has advocated for improved protection and access to rights for asylum seekers and refugees since it was established in Malta in 1993. We have offered legal assistance to asylum seekers in detention and in the community since 1999, and social work services since 2003. Initially our social work service was focused on supporting vulnerable individuals and families, first in detention and, later, in the community. From 2008, JRS started expanding its social work service to include a broader range of psychosocial services and support, such as: support to access medical care (since 2008), psychological support to individuals or groups of migrants (since 2010) and support to access employment (since 2016). Today JRS operates a phone line providing information, basic integration support and assistance and advice on legal matters and integration-related issues. This initial contact is often followed by an in-person appointment with one of our professionals. We also visit the Initial Reception Centre (IRC), detention and open centres regularly, providing information and legal assistance to all new arrivals.

Human Rights

Brief Description of NGO/Group

Humanism is a democratic, secular and ethical life stance, which affirms that human beings have the right and responsibility to give meaning and shape to their own lives. It stands for the building of a more humane society through an ethic based on human and other natural values in the spirit of reason and free inquiry through human capabilities. It is not theistic, and does not accept supernatural views of reality.

The Malta Humanist Association (MHA) was founded in 2010, and we now have some 2,000 followers. Alongside other activities associated with our Objectives, we offer ceremonies (weddings, baby-namings, funerals and memorials) for those without religious beliefs.

Projects Being Run

- Who am I? Why am I here? Exploring pupils’ inquiries on existential themes. The project seeks to collaborate with a secondary school on deepening their students’ inquiry of existentialist themes beyond the curriculum. Existential questions are relevant to Year 9 to Year 11 students in particular, who will be starting to grapple with profound existential topics such as the meaning of existence, anxiety, the nature of personal identity, authenticity, the possession of free will, discomfort or fascination with death. The project builds on the valuable existential groundwork laid by the Personal and Social Development programme, as well as the Ethics and English Literature SEC syllabi, in the form of dialogue-based, small-group tutorials where children can explore existential inquiry in a safe but challenging space.

- Sciencivicus : Active citizenship through science education. Sciencivicus is a youth exchange about how to become more powerful citizens and have a healthy civic life with the help of science. The project is focused on developing critical thinking, using science as a tool for protecting human rights, understanding basic science concepts, and fighting pseudo-science. The project is between 5 partners, Romania, Italy, Malta, Poland and Turkey. Six young people and 1 group leader from each country will be taking part in May 2022, in Bucharest.

- Trust oneself to trust others: Erasmus+ Youth KA105 Youth Exchange
This exchange will help young people to seek their identities, emancipate, and learn how to better trust themselves, for a fairer and more humanist world. The project is between 4 partners. The exchange will be in Italy, with 10 participants and 2 group leaders from each organisation.

How to Volunteer

Volunteers and new members are always welcome. Visit our website maltahumanist.org or Facebook page Malta Humanist Association.
