On 19th September 5-7pm SOS Malta organised a panel discussion, ‘Shrinking Newsrooms of Malta’ as part of the Global Week of Action for the SDGs.
The panel discussion addressed the harsh reality that many newsrooms are radically shrinking, struggling to generate revenue and attract new journalists to the job.
Interestingly, the public is largely unaware of how the rapidly changing media landscape is putting such pressure on the fourth pillar of democracy.
The event contributed to Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.
The panelists who were invited to discuss the subject were Bertrand Borg (Times of Malta), Kurt Sansone (Malta Today, Institute of Maltese Journalists), Therese Comodini Cachia (Human Rights Lawyer), and Natalino Fenech (MCAST Senior Lecturer Media & Journalism).
Times of Malta wrote an article about the discussion called “‘Uncompetitive pays, constant pressure,’ among challenges faced by newsrooms,” published on 19 September 2022.
